For the month of November we thought we'd take some time to reminisce about one of our favorite upcoming holidays here at Visual Designs by Chris. I have great memories from my childhood all revolving around my family holiday traditions. Now I have the joy of passing that along those traditions to my own family! I'll bet you have some favorite memories and traditions, as well, and we're just dying to hear about them!

Here's how the game will go:

1. You will pick 15 words from this list of 31 words (see below).

2. You will send an email at VDBCBingo@gmail.com with your 15 words. Also, please include your Forum name in the subject line. Deadline will be November 1st, with the first word called on November 2nd. So don't wait, get your list in today!

3. Everyday you will need to check back to this original post in this thread, and see if one of your words are called! All words called will be updated in this original post, So, it will be up to you to come back here and check! I will usually call a word a day, but you never know when I might call it. So you will need to be on your toes and check in frequently! Who knows, there might be more than one word on some days!

4. Once all 15 of your words are called, post on this thread. The first to post, calling BINGO, will win! (We will verify the winner with your selected words that you emailed! There can be no tie, because the winner will be determined by the FIRST PERSON to post on this thread calling BINGO!)
That's it! This is one of those "must be present to win" games... you have to call Bingo yourself in order to win, so it's up to you to keep checking!

So send in your bingo words right away and prepare for a heaping helping of family fun along the path to BINGO! Who will win? The suspense will grow daily!

1.Angel
2.Carols
3.Candy cane

24.Stocking
25.Sled
26.Scarf
27.Tree
28.Thanksgiving
29.Turkey
30.Winter
31.Wonderland

Called Words:
18. Reindeer: First word called. Good luck everyone!
01. Angel: A must for the top of every tree. :)
27. Tree: is one of the most popular traditions associated with the celebration of Christmas.
13. Mistletoe: Hanging mistletoe over a doorway during the holiday season is a tradition around the world.
16. Ornaments: A F.W. Woolworth brought the glass ornament tradition to the United States in 1890.
12. Magic: Seems there's always a little Magic around Holiday times
17. Presents: An early source of gift-giving comes from St. Nicholas, who was remembered for his charitable giving. Often on his feast day parents would leave small gifts of chocolate or fruit for their children. His feast day slowly came over time to be associated with the celebration of the Feast of the Nativity on December 25th.
06. Frostbite: is the medical condition whereby damage is caused to skin and other tissues due to extreme cold.
23. Santa Claus: I bet about everyone has this one!
28. Thanksgiving: How many of you have been waiting on this one?
15. Noel: The word comes from the French word Noël meaning "Christmas"
05. December: My Favorite month of the year. :)
09. Holidays: Is everyone ready for these?
26. Scarf: Time to grab your scarf ladies. It's getting chilly out there!
04. Cookies: Our 15th word. What's your favorite?
10. Holly:Holly, Ivy and other greenery such as Mistletoe were originally used in pre-Christian times to help celebrate the Winter Solstice Festival and ward off evil spirits and celebrate new growth.
02. Carols: What's your all time favorite?
20. Snowflakes: Can't wait to see them flying around here. Can you?
07. Gingerbread: Don't you just love the smell of this baking?
03. Candy Cane: I have two dogs here that make it impossible to add them to my Christmas tree :)
21. Sleigh: Ever wondered why reindeer pull Santa’s sleigh? Reindeer were possibly selected as Santa’s mode of transportation because they live in the arctic while Santa is said to live at the North Pole. Thus it makes perfect sense for the reindeer to pull Santa’s sleigh.
25. Sled: a vehicle with runners for sliding
08. Gift: a voluntary act which does not require anything in return.
24. Stockings: And the stockings were hung by the chimney with care....
30. Winter:is the season with the shortest days and the lowest average temperatures.

Our most recently started tradition is having my MIL and SIL over Christmas eve. We attend our Christmas Eve service at church, they spend the night and we open our presents in the morning :). It is so much more fun to have them here. DH is a dud on Christmas morning - lol. We started this the Christmas after FIL died and will continue forever as far as I'm concerned :).

Sounds like fun and wonderful of you to share your holiday time with them. We generally go to my daughters on Christmas Eve. DH loves playing Elves with my son-in-law. They have a ball putting together and playing with all the toys. :) Plus we have the added treat of getting to see those eyes light up on Christmas morning.

We had many tradditions growing up. Some of them we still keep today and others have gone more by the wayside as we move more. My favorite that we still do when we are with my family for Christmas - which we will be this year. Everyone is coming here and will hear my husband preach his frist Cristmas sermon- is our stockings. We all sit in a circle (which started out with 5 of us and grew to 7 as my little sister and brother were born- and now if everyone is home would be 15) and starting with the youngest we take out 1 item and tell a reason that it reminds us of God. For example a piece of candy miught remind us that His word is sweeter than honey and we need to be digesting it regularly, or a piece of fruit may remind us of the fruits of the Spirit, or an apple specifically can remind us of the 3 parts of God with its 3 parts, or can be cut in half sideways to show a star and remind us that a star sat over the place where Jesus was born. The trick is that once someone use a reason for something we have to use something else. If anyone is gettting stumped we will all help them (along with the little ones).

One of our family traditions is

Christmas Crackers which aren't really Crackers. they are little round packages they look like toilet paper rolls with wrapping paper around them. Which we each pull on eachothers ends and they pop and then there is a paper hat inside, usually a joke, and maybe a small toy (like a cracker jacks toy from years ago) So then to add to the craziness we all wear our paper hats around the table and have some mahvelous pictures of such. So this is something else I should dig out to post.

But it is lots of fun and met with lots of merriment. Now my husbands family also does them. Little traditions have infused themselves between the families.

I'd love to hear anyone elses traditions.

Enjoy!

Thanksgiving is always at our house. I've cooked the meal for about 10 years now. I do the stuffing, gravy, potatoes, yams. The rest of the family bring turnips, onions, carrots, and squash. We have way to much food and way to many desserts. Most are homemade but my MIL will buy a few pies to...so we have way to many desserts to choose from. We watch the parade and football all day. The Christmas tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving.

Christmas is ongoing. We start in July with my sisters family. We have a Christmas in July event. A big turkey dinner, decorate a tree, wrap presents etc. A week before Christmas we drive to Maine and celebrate with my SIL and her family. Lots of cousins etc. Christmas eve is spent with my inlaws, BIL and my family of 4. We have a meal together which varies and the kids get to open one gift. Christmas day is the same 7 of us from the night before as well as more extended family. We start the day with my family of 4 reading Luke 2, and celebrating Jesus's Bday. The kids open their stockings. We have sausage rolls for breakfast (cresent rolls wrapped around Jimmmy dean sausage links). Then we all get dressed, and all take turns opening gifts. We do a smorgasbord of food, and eat off and on all day long. The tree comes down the day after Christmas so that its down for Calebs bday on the 28th.

New Years is always an evening at home. We order chinese food and watch the ball drop in New York.

I only have 3, so this game of Bingo is not going well for me. But, I sure do love Thanksgiving! I usually have 20 something people for a feast. One year I had 29 people from 11 different countries. It was cool. My family is very international!:)

rpcrafter
11-07-2008, 08:57 PM
Wow Lynn, that is really cool! We usually have around 25 people, all from the same metro area. Totally not international, not even national. However this Thanksgiving, we will be international but not together. My mom and brother will be in Germany for Thanksgiving this year. It will feel odd without them. We also lost my Uncle this spring, so that will feel odd and sad too. We will just have to remember our many blessings and those the departed left with us.

I miss fresh baked goods at the holidays! I would eat them when I was little and then the next week feel like I had the stomach flu. Ever year I had the stomach flu the week after the holidays til the diagnoses me with Gluten intolerance. I miss my grandmas Chocolate haystack concoctions. Or how about those magic dream bars on the back of the sweet and condensed milk cans. These had to be the easiest. my Mom would let us make those because it was all just layers and then in the oven. Ahh fond memories.

Two years ago I made a 6x6 album for my family. Each one got a little album with recipes from the family. Some of the recipes from England. Some from Southern Arizona. Some from Danish grandmother. Just lots of fun. I must admit I did it digital because I had so many to put together. And I did it by downloading free quick pages from around the web. I was very short on time, but everyone loved it.

Chris and I have been chatting and came up with what we think is an awesome idea. We've decided to give a Biggest Bingo Loser award. Here's how its going to work:
First someone calls Bingo.. Then we will take the next 3 posts, each person needs to include how many words they have on their list that has been called. Out of these 3, we're going to take the one with the least amount of called words and award them a prize. How's that sound?? :) Here's the prizes they will receive:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c127/krkrump/CD00187_300.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c127/krkrump/CD00146_300.jpg
Gosh I hope I explained this ok. Does everyone understand? Any questions?

ChrisDurnan
11-10-2008, 05:22 PM
So it may be worth it to have the lowest amount of words..hmmm.. So now I know some are begging for you not to call their word. Have to wait til someone calls BINGO before you can post how few words you have.

Woohoo!

Now this is a special kinda Bingo Player!!

I love all of the carols! Caroling is a huge tradition in our household. On Christmas Eve, we carol around my in-law's neighborhood. We are expected at many of the houses and it has become part of their traditions for us to come as well. Many of the folks are elderly and alone, so it brightens their night. A few are handicapped and don't get out to experience much of the spirit of Christmas, so we bring it to them. It really makes my heart feel good. My children absolutely love it! It can be quite cold, as we live in Colorado, but you don't seem to notice when you are spreading good cheer.

One of my favorite Christmas carols (other than the traditional ones) is "Suzy Snowflake" by Rosemary Clooney. It is such a fun song and I have loved it since I was a kid. An off-beat carol my sister and I like to sing is "Percy the Puny Poinsettia" by Elmo & Patsy (famous for Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer). It is a quirky little song about a lonely flower.

BTW, I am at 8 words so far.

I'm not going to win this one with 5 more words to go. Oh well, it is fun.

I thought I'd share an unusual Christmas tradition with the DH family. After opening gifts and eating a wonderful meal we have some simple family fun. We play a game that DH great grandma came up with. It involves 1 or 2 mouse traps and ping pong balls. We set the trap(s) in the middle of the living room floor and toss the ping pong balls at it. The fun part is the trap throws the balls back at us. This makes for some great laughter. This really isn't anything to do with Christmas and could be done anytime but it is what we do. The grandma(s) loved to have us all there laughing.

That really sounds like fun. And something everyone would enjoy. May have to do that with the family this year. Thanks for posting that.

One of our traditions is Friends for New year's. We celebrate the holidays with family and don't worry about running around or buying holiday gifts for friends. Because we have Christmas with our friends on New year's eve. So they get all the great after Christmas holiday deals that can be found. And we get to have two Christmases and not worry about missing anyone on the day of Christmas.

We also play trivial pursuit. Guys vs Girls. And everyone brings their own decks. Any trivial pursuit they can come up with. Including the friends or the cheers deck. Which fall under the entertainment choice. The girls always win. We have a friend who is a sports buff and she kicks the guys butts every time. So we have about 10 decks of cards and you can choose from any deck the color that matches your roll. no matter the topic. It's alot of fun. Alot of fun! Most here trivial pursuit and they roll their eyes. But everyone loves it. And we start at 9 and play til midnight. Whoever has the most pie wins. The girls are 4 years running!

Okay I am off to do some crafts with the little one!!
Enjoy!
Chris

I like the after Christmas with friends celebration! We try to squeeze so much in a few days before, we're rushing around like mad. It's perfect since we spend New Year's Eve here at the house with friends anyway!:D

My DH's family (aunts, uncles, cousins, there's about 30 of them) "exchange" gifts on Christmas Eve....sorta! Everyone buys and wraps a $10 gift. When you put your gift on the table, you pull a number. Whoever pulls #1, gets their choice of gifts...they open it (and if they like it, try to hide it, so that no one remembers what they got!). Whoever pulls #2, gets their choice of the gifts on the table (surprise!) or the gift that #1 got. #3 goes next and gets the choice of #1's or #2's gifts or a surprise....and it keeps going! If someone chooses "your" gift, you get to choose someone else's or a new one. You can only lose your gift three times and then you can keep your final choice! Oh yea, at the end, #1 can choose again (since they didn't have a real "choice"!)!

The first time we did it, I was REALLY confused...but it gets to be funny seeing everyone trying to hide their gifts and the conniving they do...."Honey, you take away that gift and choose that one and then..."

In our family, we call this Naughty Santa. It's one of the highlights of the season for us. Everyone enjoys it! :)

Hey Chris do you use the horse one? My friends and family won't play the horse one with me anymore.

I do have the horse one. :-) And no one will play that one with me. I usually put the cards out with the others. We pretty much play any trivia cards. I think last year we had a box from genus, friends game, the equine trivia, 80s, 90s, Kids, sports And a few others. We really stack the deck one might say. So if you roll well you usually can answer the question.

I love doing New Year's with friends. it becomes a laid back evening of lots of stories and talk about the new year and everything we want to accomplish.

Enjoy!

Wow, I really must have been sleeping lately. I didn't realize there were so many postings in the forum. Does that tell you I need to get back into the swing of things? I love the "traditions" that I've been reading about the games and stuff for the holidays. It's nice to read how all of you have siblings and plenty of family to celebrate with. Wish hubby and I had that.

I'm also needing 4 words before being able to yell the magic word! Keep em coming.
