View Full Version : Nov 5th - Nov 11th- Cutter File to something "hanging"

Hello to everyone!
Here is my weekly challenge idea for you. Use any cutter file by someone in the store here to make an ornament or tag or something you can "hang".
The goal of the weekly challenges is to help you start cutting files and not just collecting files.
So here are my thoughts... Every year I try to buy something for the tree that remarks on that year. When I head on vacation throughout the year I buy keychains instead of tshirts to put on the tree and in November I work on tagging them with a quick date time or description as to what they mean and were part of our life. So when we put our tree up it is like reading out history. From the time we dated and the time we were together. I have friends who stand and "read" our tree every time they come over. So in my effort to make or find the " next " ornament. I thought what a great challenge.
If you can take one of our files and make it into an ornament or a tag for a package or something you hang from the top of your window sill. You can enter it into the challenge. It will take a bit of thinking. But also remember that if you take an image and cut it three times then fold it in the middle you can line up those folds back to back, glue and make an item 3d. Or you can just cut a file and alter it enough to inspire you as it hangs from your tree. Or make them simple enough to use for packages.
I will random draw a winner from the participants and they will receive their pick of a file from my section of the store. File must be individual and not collection (i.e. group of files) value less then $5.00. Must be chosen by the end of November. Entries must be posted by november the 11th.
Just remember it doesn't have to be specifically holiday oriented, but it needs to be something that "hangs" whether it be from a tree, a package, or a window sill. And you then could use that item for a gift this year.
I hope this makes sense. as I am beginning to fade. Wew. but I am gonna think on this and what I can come up with to.
Enjoy!
Chris

Here are some snowflake diecuts I helped my son make last year to give out to family members. It was fun to do. :) Easy and he was happy to see everyone's happy smiles.
If you want the file.. I already had it in the store. (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/product.php?productid=16230) Holy Smokes! didn't even realize it :-) But you can use any file. Tis totally up to you.

Here is a hanging stocking I made last year for the Fire Chief's office door. Pocket has John Deere gummies in it. He also farms with JD. This is not anyones file and not an entry. Just an example of something hanging and how simple it could be. Know to finish the turkey wheel tickets ans cards I have sitting here. Maybe I can do something Sunday. Sat. is the FD fund raiser and my hubby has to work 12hrs at his other job. So I will be there filling in. ;)

I am hoping some of our best customers will let us put their pic in the center, or we could put a flower in the center maybe. ..or a jewel. I have a ribbon tied on the one with the picture of me.. All the rest have wet Stickles on them right now! LOL

The relection in the back is from the flash on all the stickles on this thing, You cant see them to good, but they are there, This hangs on the dinning room light over my craft table.
Every one returns to work tomorrow, I will try to get in there and cut a few Christmas balls for my tree.

They aren't to hard if you have it in a file. I made a file for it, and it was super easy to cut, and fold, and only took a few minutes to glue together, and yes, use a glue made for paper. the roller adhesive wont hold for long.
If you want to hang it. When you put the top and bottom together, You will notice in the very center, there is a little opening, slip your ribbon in and out the other end of the bottom, glue the centers together to the bottom, then slip the ribbon through the top then glue. And there ya go.
I have this file in store on sale till tonight for 1.49, with instructions and pictures on how to put it together. I also included 2 extra circles so you can make it a tree or topiary.
I originally made the file to make these to hang at daughters wedding reception, but she said, no, she was it super simple. Jeez!

Okay, Let me know if you have any questions on it. rsmobley85@gmail.com
Thanks for buying the file. That file is sized for a finished 5 1/2 inch wide ball. So if you want a smaller ball, just reduce the size of your 20 circles.

Ok, I realized that my Christmas card fits the bill here. I used Chris' Good friends are blessings file, took out the angel, welded it and made it for the inside of the ornament. My DD suggested I make the ornament removable so the recipient can hang from their tree, use it to decorate a package or hang it on their window. I used repositionable adhesive on the back of the ornament. I don't have all these done, I'm trying to figure out if I can reconfigure the photo I'm going to use to a round shape, put it on the inside of the card and they can stick it onto the back of the ornament to make it two sided. I want to use a photo from our vacation but have to play in photo shop. Here's the link http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/forum/album.php?albumid=12&pictureid=400

Ginger and Sharon--love your projects. Sue, I'm hoping to make around 60 of these. I was inspired by a ribbon that's not even on the card--it was brown with turqoise Christmas trees. The main ornament is Bazzil bling and angel is foil by American Crafts. I thought about putting a greeting on the card--just a one word like joy or peace--but my panel of experts (friends and family) all thought it was better without.

Thank you, and Thank you for posting what you used, I was admiring that beautiful blue paper. And shinny paper. And that ribbon, Im so not a red and green christmas girl.
I seen that brown and turquoise Christmas (with poinsettia) ribbon at Michael's and feel in love with it, but it don't match my blue, white and silver Christmas theme, Hm! May have to change it up some, LOL.

Here I am! I'm posting the 3 balls I've made, the first one I made is the white one, and it's pretty messy, 2nd is red with green dots, cheap paper, getting better... then I used Bo Bunny heavier printed paper on the left and you can see it holds it's shape way better! I'm having fun, not sure I will put Stickles on it or not...maybe later, who knows. Thanks Sharon for your help. It's in my album too http://tinyurl.com/ycjfr28

Nice job on the pretty Christmas balls Sue. The right paper seems to make a huge difference--I've found out that I'm better off doing a practice cut with something else before I use the "expensive" stuff--that does look like a fun file to play with.

Thanks! I too found out using the heavy paper holds up better but I had to try it with regular paper and light weight cardstock first. Wanted to make sure it was going to work. I was thinking about spraying some with glimmer mist for a little more sparkle. :D
lisaavolio
11-11-2009, 11:18 PM
I, too, tried some ornaments with regular cardstock. If I make more, it will be with fancier and/or heavier cardstock.
I used the ribbon type files from Chris' CD00520 Ribbons 3 and wove chenille stems through the strips. I then made a tree from Chris' CD00613 Joy Love Peace Happiness (tree or cake) file to hang in the middle. The next one uses a thinner paper ribbon from the same file, but I used red rayon cord and made a tassel for the bottom. The tree hanging in it is from Chris' CD00604 groovy holiday wishes.
(Sorry for the bad photos- I'm too tired to try again.)

Next, I used a ribbon type cut from Darcy's Designs DD053_GroovyBorders with silver metallic chenille wires, and made another tree (from Chris' CD00613 again, cut an inch bigger than the previous ones), and glued on some metallic confetti.
The final one is made of fabric. I used a snowflake from Beloved Keepsakes' BK00206 Snow Title. I ironed Heat 'n Bond Light (fusible webbing with a paper backing) to some gold lame fabric. Then I put the fabric down on my Cricut mat, with the paper layer on top. It cut through all the layers. I decided to line the ornament with some fleece and then decorate it by machine quilting through the snowflake using metallic gold thread.
It worked pretty well, but not well enough to do a bunch of these for my Bible Study group the way I'd hoped. I think I will use cotton quilting fabrics and a different snowflake to make another one, to see if that works better. This took too much time. I thought I could use a Pigma pen to write all the ladies' names and the year on each ornament.

We have two houdini horses. We have to double lock the one and then lock the outer gate to. because if he knows it is open he will attempt it. hahah. We have to fix a little bit of the fence but isn't to bad. And they hubby fixed the tailgate. Was just frustrating.
I just realized I need to go draw a winner for this. will be back.
