Welcome to the new Sketch Challenge. Chris and I have been working to create a monthly sketch challenge to get you scrapping, having fun and getting more FREE files. YEAH! Chris is so generous!

Here's how it will work, I will post a sketch every month and Chris will provide a cutting file and you will work a little magic and show us what you have created.

Your challenge this month is to use this sketch by Becky Fleck (http://www.pagemaps.com/) to complete a layout. Feel free to change the sketch to fit your individual page. Please post your completed layout in this forum for everyone to enjoy. Once you complete the challenge, you will earn an additional FREE file. The additional free files will only be available until Jan. 31, so let's see what you can do!

By the way, If you like this sketch, Check out Becky's site with more sketches. Pagemaps (http://www.pagemaps.com/),
Also check out her blog challenge here: http://www.pagemaps.com/blog.php

I have never done a sketch challenge. So I am not sure what I am supposed to do. Do I make a layout that matches the sketch using the cutterfile you provided? So it can be of any subject? Do all pieces have to be used? Can you adjust sizes and or placement?

Sorry, just a big confused.

The beauty of sketch challenges are the sketches give you a starting point. You may change the sketch to fit your needs, number of photos, etc. Chris has provided some coordinating cut files, but you don't have to use them. Basically, what does this sketch say to you? What photos do you have lying around the need to be scrapped that might fit this sketch. Don't forget, are you creative enough to make this sketch a card? Anything goes. I hope you play along. Please ask, if you have more questions.

I'm having trouble getting the file to download. I'm getting an error message saying "decompression failed" when I click on the .ai file. Any advice?

Tammy

ChrisDurnan
01-16-2009, 10:13 AM
Sounds like it is trying to unzip the file in your browser. I would save it to your computer and then unzip.

And if you did do that I would save it to a different directory to save it to. Windows will download a part of a file and if that portion fails because of internet interruptions or things like that then when you go to do it again It just adds to your previous partial download. Causing a bad download. I recommend everyone download a file always twice to two different directories. It may look whole but can be corrupt because of windows practices.

Just thoughts.

I hope you get it down. Would love to see what you can do!
If you can't get it email me direct (cdurnan@visualdesignsbychris.com)and I will email it to you so you can participate.

Enjoy!

Thanks Chris, but that didn't work either :(
I am using a Mac so I just tried switching browsers - from Safari to Firefox. It downloaded in Firefox just fine but now it gives me this......

An error occurred attempting to expand "AI_SketchChallengeJan_CMD.zip". The archive may be damaged.

So, rather than keep playing around with this, I'm going to shoot you a quick email.

and here is mine, I have converted the sketch into a 12"X12" template which I then used in PSCS3. I have used Chris's cutter files by opening them in Illustrator, converting them to a PDF and then I was able to use them in PS. I have also used a digital scrapbooking kit I designed called "Lichen".

Wow, I am really impressed with how quickly you got your samples completed. I was a little slower even though I chose the sketch a few days before I even announced the challenge:) I finally finished mine example:

Here it is: Ben at 9.
I used all Cosmo Cricket paper and embellishments
I used the scallops and tag that Chris provided
I also used Chris's number jumble that she has lying around her computer hard drive and needs to get loaded to the store:D

It took me forever, but I like how it turned out. Thanks Rosalie

Okay next. you can't stop Karen when she is on a scrappin' roll!

And next AWESOME layout Rosalie!!!! Can you email it to me. downloading it from the forum is to small for the store. I will load it up with the number jumble.

enjoy!

Yes, you will have until the end of January. The sketch will stay here for you to complete whenever you want. Chris will just remove the file links on or around jan. 31. Chris and I are working on getting a Feb sketch, Chris is taking a little holiday, so we will get it up as close to the beginning of Feb as possible.

What gorgeous photos, the colours you have chosen match your photos really well. You could separate your photos to allow your background to "frame" your photos or perhaps "mat" them on a plain coloured card to give them a narrow plain frame all round, which would also break them up from your background, but overall, I think your layout is lovely. :D

I don't think your layout looks busy at all. Your background is a nice muted pattern. Try the framing idea, but maybe just a journal strip or 2 will help balance the large photos with the smaller tag. What file did you use for your strip along the side?

This is my first time ever doing any type of challenge. I like to think about my pages and work on them for days so the time limits on challenges are usually too limiting for me. But this challenge came at the perfect time. Scrapbooking is my release and I really needed some scrap time! It was a lot of fun and I sure hope I get to do it again.

I've been working on my page since the first day the challenge was posted. I’m finally happy with how it turned out. Mine is a looser interpretation of the sketch. I was set on using the cow paper and I didn't have very much of it.

I used the scalloped file on the cow paper and again on the pink cardstock. I elongated the tag to fit my title and hide a seam and also adjusted the journaling lines to fit my journaling. I haven’t used the registration marks for awhile so I ended up messing with that for a long time. I also cut the title and the words in pink on my wishblade.

Great pages everyone!

This is the layout I did with the sketch. It is my prom picture with my husband-to-be and then us at different times later on.

I like how you tipped your title tag. It adds some really nice interest. Rosalie

Super cute cow page! A looser interpretation of the sketch is perfectly fine. That's the joy of a sketch. I hope to post 1 sketch every month, so I hope you do join us again. Rosalie

Wow, I am loving every single layout, and card, from this challenge. I just think it is so wonderful how one sketch can be done in so many different ways, and all look so terrific.

Thanks Rose. Great job!

So coming in just under the wire, here is my layout of the sketch file

and the full two page layout that I did

The sketch just lent itself to these pictures, which were of my son and his friends enjoying their last day of summer.
Thanks for this challenge, I can't wait to do another.

Another nice job. I think we have the same slip and slide. Of course we have 11 inches of snow so it is stored in the basement for now. I might even have some pictures of the kids using it somewhere. I'm sending Caz some snow to cool you down. It was a good thought. :D

Heather, your layout is perfect. I love the colors, and you are the only one to make it a 2 pager. Good job. Thanks for playing. Rosalie

I am so excited that we had so many people play this month. You still have a few hours here to qualify for another free file. Chris is busy working on a file for us. I will PM all the participants a link when it's ready.

Keep your eyes open for the Feb sketch. I will have it ready sometime next week.

OK...I did a 2-fer! (VERY) loose version of the sketch and I used BOTH Musical Jumbles!!!

And YES, my DH has FIVE, count them, FIVE different guitars!!

(I created the title and guitar (had a little help from DH with the guitar) on my Pazzle!)

Thank you so much for the thought of the snow, unfortunately it melted before I was able to put it to good use :D We are now into our third week of high 30C temps and I am sooooo ready for winter LOL

Better late than never? We were hit on the 27th with the ice storm so my pictures sat on my hard drive, with no way to print them until the power came back. So, here's my take on the January Sketch challenge. The word Happy in the title is from Chris's Challenge 3 collection.

Sussann - Sorry to hear about your ice storm and the power outage. I bet that was not fun. Glad you could finally join in.

I just remembered that we got an additional file when we completed the challenge. How do I go about getting it?

Caz,
You didn't get one because you are on the CT team and can just pillage the files already. :-)

As for dkc. Rosalie may have just missed it. :-) I would just PM her.

I know there was an enddate to the freebie for participating, but my eyes are blurry and watery as I am headed to bed with the pounding head. So I can't look much further into it. I am sure Rosalie will send you one. And we'll make sure to make the first post with the enddate for participation file.
Have a wonderful evening!!!

Dk,
I am sorry that you did not get a PM for the January sketch. I tried to PM everyone, but your PM capabilities are turned off. You can edit that in your User CP, so you are ready for next time. Thanks again for playing. Rosalie
